          Charles Frederick Leopold Nord's Biography

          Dutch dentist and orthodontist, member of the Dutch academy of science (KNAW).
          He was the son of the medical officer Julius Nord and Mathilde Gertrude Goldsmith. The family moved in his youth from Delft, Den Helder to Amersfoort.
          On advice of the family housefriend W.J.C. Fuyt he studied dentistry in Utrecht (1905). He participated in a strike of students Dentistry on 2 December 1910 against the director of the institute John E. Grevers. On 31 March 1911 he became a dentist.
          His first practice in Gorichem (1912) was in association with the first female Dutch dentist Henriette van Gelderen. He specialised in the surgical and orthodontic aspects of dentistry. In 1930 he recommended removable plate devices and developed the active plate.
          From 1931 till 1947 he was secretary general of the Fédération Dentaire Internationale (FDI). He got honorary doctorates and prices in Europe, South Africa and Australia.
          Personal
          He was a very hard worker: He worked till 6 PM in his practice and till 2 AM for the Duch Association of Dentists, of which he was Chairman twice and other professional organisations like the FDI. He was a great debater with a sharp memory. He spoke three modern languages fluently and helped the international FDI organisation survive two world wars.
          He married on 30 July 1912 Philippina Catharina Elshout. They got three sons. After their divorce on 1 July 1946 he remarried on 4 September 1946 Albertine Rosine Cornelia Maria Bierens. They got no children.
          He died 28 August 1978 in Amsterdam.
