Charles Bronson's Biography
American actor in over 70 films, often cast in roles of police officers, gunfighters, or vigilantes in revenge-oriented plot lines. At the height of his fame in the early 1970s, he was the world’s No. 1 box office attraction, commanding $1 million per film.
The first-born of 15 kids, he was the only one to finish high school. Bronson joined his dad in the coal mines of Pennsylvania before his screen debut came in 1951. His films include “Miss Sadie Thompson,” “Battle of the Bulge,” “The Mechanic” and “Death Wish.” Rough hewn and worn, at the age of 50, he found himself an international sex symbol
A fine artist, Bronson painted for pleasure. He was a humanitarian who was reclusive by nature. A heavy smoker and coffee drinker, Bronson gave up alcohol.
He was married to Jill Ireland for years; they had five kids and appeared in 15 films together. He was widowed on 18 May 1990 when Ireland died of cancer. On 27 December 1998 he married his longtime sweetheart, actress Kim Weeks in a private ceremony at their Malibu home.
Known in Italy as “Il Brutto,” the ugly one, the American tough-guy actor died in Los Angeles on 30 August 2003 of pneumonia at age 81.
