          Chantal Goya's Biography

          Vietnamese-born French singer and actress who started her career as a yé-yé girl, singing a catchy mid-1960s hybrid of girl-group pop and French chanson. She also enjoyed a career as a French New Wave actress; she had a starring role as Madeleine in the 1966 Jean-Luc Godard film Masculin, féminin and in Jean-Daniel Pollet’s L’amour c’est gai, l’amour c’est triste (Love is joy, love is sad). Since 1975, she has become mostly known as a singer for children. Her song “Bécassine, c’est ma cousine” was translated into English and became a huge techno hit (Bécassine is My Cousin).
          Her maternal grandfather, a renowned radiologist, founded a cancer centre in Vietnam. She is the first daughter of Bertrand de Guerre and Colette Dartiguenave, her mother was of Martinique origin. Her father’s last name ‘de Guerre’ means “of war” in English. Her husband, singer Jean-Jacques Debout, chose her stage name, Goya, after seeing a portrait of the famous Spanish painter.
