          Cesare Musatti's Biography

Italian psychoanalyst and a founder of Italian psychoanalysis. In 1928 Musatti became director of the Laboratory of Psychology at the University of Padua. He brought Psychoanalysis to Italy with important international works. After spreading Gestalt’s psychology in Italy, he became the first Italian scholar of psychoanalysis.
In the 1930s, Freud’s theories were not well received either by the Universities or by the Catholic Church in Italy, due to the Fascist’s cultural ideology. The Society of Psychoanalysis, founded in 1925, was also limited by racial laws (1938), which adversely affected the Jewish members of the Society. Musatti was removed from university teaching and downgraded to a high school teacher.
In 1944, during the Nazi occupation, he was saved by lawyer Paolo Toffanin (1890-1971), brother of Giuseppe Toffanin, who helped him to move to Ivrea, as a guest of his friend Adriano Olivetti.
He died in Milan on 21 March 1989, aged 91.
