Carl Wilhelm Christian von Doderer's Biography

In 1840 he began a stonemason’s apprenticeship which he completed then passed the royal Württemberg state examination in construction.
In the autumn of 1852, Doderer was appointed “Professor of Beautiful Architecture” at the Genie Academy (training facility for engineering troops) in Klosterbruck (Znojmo in Moravia). In this position he carried out numerous military constructions for the Austro-Hungarian Army High Command, among others in Verona and in Wiener Neustadt.
In 1866 Doderer took over the “Professorship for Building Construction and Architecture” at the Polytechnic Institute in Vienna (since 1872 Vienna University of Technology). There he was dean of the building school in 1870–1872 and 1882–1884. In 1876, Doderer was elected rector of the Vienna University of Technology for the academic year 1876-1877.
Doderer retired in 1896. He died of a stroke on 13 May 1900 in Vienna at age 75.
His two sons Wilhelm Carl Gustav and Richard Gottlieb Wilhelm later made the von Doderer family one of the richest in the Austro-Hungarian Empire with a fortune of around 12 million crowns as contractors or heavy industrialists. His grandson was the famous Austrian writer Heimito von Doderer.
