          Carl Ernst von Stetten's Biography

          German-French portrait and genre painter who lived and worked in France. He came from the wealthy Stetten banking family.
          He began his studies on 16 October 1876 in the antiquities class at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich. He then moved to Paris in the 1880s to study painting under Jean-Léon Gérôme. He attended the Académie Julian under Gustave Boulanger, Gustave Courtois, Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret and Jules-Joseph Lefebvre. He lived for some time in Neuilly-sur-Seine near Paris, where he ran his own studio until 1913.
          Courtois and von Stetten were longtime companions. Von Stetten was often the model for his lover’s portraits and nudes. The couple spent the First World War together in the Swiss canton of Ticino.
          Von Stetten won medals at the 1889 Salon de Paris and at the 1893 Chicago Exhibition. He died in 1942.
