          Carl Anton Meckel's Biography

          German architect who designed numerous private and public buildings, many of them in Freiburg im Breisgau and its wider surroundings. Together with Karl Gruber and Joseph Schlippe, he was influential in shaping the image of Freiburg before the Second World War.
          Carl Anton Meckel was the son of the architect Max Meckel (1847-1910). He completed an architecture degree at the Technical University in Karlsruhe with Carl Schäfer and at the Technical University of Munich with Friedrich von Thiersch. In 1897 he entered the architectural office of his father in Freiburg. The collaboration between son and father lasted until the death of Max Meckel in 1910. Thereafter, Carl Anton Meckel headed the office independently until his death on 2 December 1938. From 1908 to 1911, and from 1919 to 1921 Meckel was chairman of the Upper Rhine section of Baden Architects and Engineers Association.
          Hs son Eberhard Meckel (1907-1969, pseudonym Peter Sixt) was a writer, and the writer and graphic artist Christoph Meckel (b. 1935) is his grandson.
