          Carel Dake's Biography

          Dutch painter, academic painting teacher, ordained Buddhist priest and Freemason.
          He taught at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam, where he, among other lessons to Guillaume Eberhard, Johanna Pieneman, Lizzy ansingh and Lou Loeber. Dake was a member of the Amsterdam artists’ society Arti et Amicitiae and chairman of it between 1892-96.
          He also lived in India and China. He was ordained Buddhist priest, was a connoisseur of oriental philosophy of religion and was a member of the Order of Freemasons.
          He died on 8 August 1918 in Amsterdam.

          His son, Professor Carel Lodewijk Dake Jr. (Schaerbeek (B), April 4, 1886 – Batavia, December 6, 1946) was also a painter and graphic artist and working in the Netherlands, San Francisco and especially in the Dutch East Indies.
