          Camille Roulin's Biography

French boy who, along with his family, was painted by Vincent Van Gogh in 1888 at Arles. The family included his postman father Joseph Roulin; his mother, Augustine; and his two siblings. Van Gogh described the family as “really French, even if they look like Russians.” In exchange for their work as models, Van Gogh gave the Roulins one painting for each family member.
Camille Roulin was the middle child in the family. When his portrait was painted, he was eleven years of age. He died on 4 June 1922 at age 44.
The Van Gogh Museum painting shows Camille’s head and shoulders. Yellow brush strokes behind him are evocative of the sun. A very similar painting resides at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In The Schoolboy with Uniform Cap Camille seems to be staring off in space. His arm is over the back of a chair, mouth gaped open, possibly lost in thought. This was the larger of the two works Van Gogh made of Camille.
