Bobby Marshall's Biography
American athlete, best known for playing football, however he also competed in baseball, track, boxing, ice hockey and wrestling. He was the first African American to play football in the Western Conference (later the Big Ten). He played in the National Football League (NFL) with the Rock Island Independents (1920), Minneapolis Marines (1921–1924) and Duluth Kelleys (1925). He along with Fritz Pollard were the first African Americans to play in the NFL.
Outside of athletics, Marshall practised law as an attorney in a law office. At the end of the 1911 season, Marshall received an appointment in the Minnesota state grain department, where he would work for the next 39 years. For years, he coached youngsters in football and boxing in Minneapolis. Marshall died of Alzheimer’s disease on 27 August 1958 at age 78. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1971.
