          Bert Haanstra's Biography

          Dutch documentary film maker specializing in the interpretation of his own country to itself and other nations. He was interested in film from childhood and worked as a press photographer and painter in the ’30s before getting into photography in 1948. Haanstra was a Camera Director in 1949; his second documentary, “Spiegel Van Holland,” won the Grand Prix for documentaries at Cannes, 1951. His short, “Glas,” won the Documentary Short Oscar in 1959 plus more than 20 other prizes. He has also worked on feature films and his international films have received more than 50 awards. He died October 23, 1997 in Hilversum, Netherlands, age 81.
