          B.F. Ten Cate's Biography

          Dutch physician, specialist in internal medicine.
          He was the son of the pharmacist Hendrik Herman ten Cate (9 December 1846, Hoogezand – 5 February 1920, Den Haag) and Lamina Mees (8 February 1852, Groningen – 14 April 1925, Den Haag). They got two sons who would become physicians: Berend and Frederik Jacobus ten Cate (2 July 1876, Steenwijk – 6 May 1951, Den Dolder).
          He dissertated in medicine, wrote several book on internal medicine and worked as a gastroenterologist in Rotterdam. He was member of the Dutch Academy of Science, but the KNAW and other biography sources have no biography of this piscus. With the neurologist Hermann Oppenheim, he wrote “Zenuwziekten en opvoeding” (Nervous disease and education, 1905), a year after the death of his daughter Anna Célestine.
          He was a contributor to the “Vereniging tegen de Kwakzalverij”, that since 15 January 1881 published the monthly “Maandblad tegen de Kwakzalverij”. Founded 1 January 1881, The Dutch Association Against Quackery is regarded as the oldest sceptical association in the world. It still tries to de-mask claims that are not scientifically proved and even starts law suits against unofficial healers. In April 1916 Ten Cate published about the food additive “Cresco”.

          The genealogical information stems from Hans C.A. ten Cate, who studied the offspring of the baptist Gerrit ten Cate.
          Ten Cate engaged on 3 July 1902 Cornelia Johanna (Cor) Hoogewerff (b. 2 sep 1877, Rotterdam). They married on 21 July 1902 in Rotterdam. They got two children: Anna Célestine (24 jun 1903, Rotterdam – 24 June 1904, Rotterdam) and Henri Désiré ten Cate (30 November 1915, Rotterdam), who became a jurist. He became on 10 June 1946 in Utrecht the grandfather of a twin: Jöns Henrik Ragnar Mattias and and Carl Berend Doen Magnus ten Cate, who became a pharmacist.
          His wife Cor died 12 December 1945 in Rotterdam and was cremated December the 19th. On 17 November 1947 he remarried Elizabeth Wilhelmina Petronella Maria Surie ( 2 January 1879, Rotterdam- 29 July 1960, Den Haag, buried 2 Augustus 1960). The got no children.
          He died 11 July 1961 in Rotterdam. He was cremated.
