German teacher and Swabian literary and local historian, awarded the Medal of Merit of the Crown Order for his literary work upon his retirement in 1914.
From 1871 Holder published numerous articles and reviews in national history, folklore and language history journals, and from 1880 his output included numerous books. His first book was a historical work on the Wunnenstein, followed by his monograph Die Ortschroniken (1886), in which he laid a theoretical foundation for his longstanding practice of local history writing.
August Holder married and had two daughters. He died on 17 June 1918 in Kirchheim am Neckar at age 67.
