          Arthur Neumann's Biography

          German pilot and pioneer of polar flight, who was the first person to fly an aircraft engine north of the 80th parallel, in 1923.
          Neumann first became a sailor, and in the First World War, initially served as a sergeant in the Imperial Navy then became a fitter with the naval aviators and finally a pilot. After the war, he turned to civil aviation and in 1921 joined Junkers Air Transport AG as a pilot.
          He died on 4 March 1974 in Rostock, aged 84.
