          Art Shires's Biography

          American baseball first baseman, a colourful character with a penchant for self-praise, he earned himself the nicknames “Art The Great” and “What-a-Man.”
          He played in Major League Baseball for the Chicago White Sox (1928-1930), Washington Senators (1930) and Boston Braves (1932). In a four-year major league career, Shires played in 290 games, accumulating 287 hits in 986 at bats for a .291 career batting average along with 11 home runs, 119 runs batted in, an on-base percentage of .347, and a .988 fielding percentage.
          Art Shires died on 13 July 1967 at the age of 60 in Italy, Texas.
