          Arnold Marc Gorter's Biography

          Dutch landscape painter.
          He was the son of the soap manufacturer Barend Gorter (18 June 1828, Sneek – 16 October 1913 6 PM, Ambt Almelo) and the paintress Geertruid Catharina ten Cate Hoedemaker (1 January 1928, Lonneker – 3 May 1907 8 PM, Ambt Almelo), who married 17 December 1852 in Hengelo. Between 18 September 1853 5 AM (his sister Hinke Gorter, Almelo) and 3 December 1866 at 4 AM they got 12 children of which Arnold Marc Gorter was the youngest.
          Gorter studied for drawing teacher at the Rijksnormaalschool (1884-1888) and finished his education from 1889 till 1891 at the Amsterdam Academy of visual arts as a student of Pierre Joseph Hubert Cuypers (1889-1891) and academy director August Allebé (1838-1927). He won a gold medal at the Paris salon in 1910.
          He was member of Arti et Amicitiae, Pulchri Studio and Sint Lucas guilds. He advised young painters and also gave painting lessons to Queen Wilhelmina, who he in 1922 accompanied during a trip to Norway. Other students were Marinus Bies, Carel Lodewijk Dake, his niece Hinke Gorter, Maria Elisabeth van Hengel, Albertus Gerhard Hulshoff Pol, Johan Meijer, Leendert Johan Muller and Henri van Os-Delhez.
          On 14 May 1903 he married Sophie Hélène Hertz (ca 1883 – 1979) in Amsterdam. They got two sons: Marc Barend Gorter (22 October 1906, A’dam – 1977) and Hans Paul Gorter (9 January 1914, A’dam – 2001).
          He died 16 September 1933 in Amsterdam.
