Arnold Heim's Biography
Swiss geologist who made groundbreaking studies on the connections between sedimentation and tectonics and gained world renown with his research in petrogeology.
Arnold Heim was born to geologist Albert Heim and Marie Heim-Vögtlin, the first practising doctor in Switzerland. By studying geology at the Swiss Federal Polytechnic in Zurich (today: ETH Zurich), Arnold Heim followed in the footsteps of his father, who held the chair in geology at that university. Arnold earned his diploma as a specialist teacher in natural sciences and then did his doctorate at the University of Zurich. From 1908-1911 and 1924-1928 he was a lecturer at the University and at the Polytechnic in Zurich. His father Albert harboured the hope that Arnold would succeed him. In 1929-1931, however, Arnold accepted a professorship at the Sun Yat Sen University in Canton (now Guangzhou, China) and, to the chagrin of his father, gave up an actual academic career.
In 1909, Arnold Heim took part in Alfred de Quervain’s Swiss expedition to Greenland. Between 1910 and 1920, Heim explored for oil in Java and Sumatra.
On 7 December 1926 he flew to South Africa with Walter Mittelholzer, the writer René Gouzy and the mechanic Hans Hartmann.
In 1930, Heim joined an expedition with Eduard Imhof and Paul Nabholz to survey Mount Minya Konka. The result was not 10,000 m high, as rumour had it, but only 7,600 m above sea level. This made Mount Everest the highest mountain in the world.
In 1932 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina, the national academy of Germany.
In 1936 he led the first Swiss Himalayan expedition with Augusto Gansser, which lasted eight months. During the expedition, Heim and Gansser kept detailed diaries, which formed the basis for the travelogue Thron der Götter (“Throne of the Gods,” 1938) and the research volume Central Himalaya: Geological Observations of the Swiss Expedition 1936 (1939).
Arnold Heim died in Zürich on 27 May 1965 at age 83.
