Armando Reverón's Biography
Venezuelan artist (painter and sculptor) considered the best in Venezuela in the twentieth century. Only son of Julio Reveron Garmendia and Dolores Travieso Montilla. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Caracas; in Spain and France. He settled in Macuto in the central coast of Venezuela from 1921, where he did much of his work, which captures and transmits the impact of tropical light. In this period, by adopting primitive habits and detached from the city, Reveron could develop a deeper understanding of the nature and this led him to employ a method of painting, and adopt procedures and materials that were suited to his desire to represent the atmosphere of the landscape under the effects of glare from direct sunlight. Also, he set colour values and devised new media, using indigenous elements. He was deeply interested in the action of light on form. An enthusiast of French Impressionism, his painting evolved to abstraction and symbolism. His favorite subjects were landscape and the female nude.
While his mental health deteriorated throughout his life (he was diagnosed with schizophrenia), his artistic abilities remained. The last of his crises took place in 1953, being admitted back into the clinic Finol Baez, the same year he was conferred the National Award for Painting. Comforted by this belated stimulus, he worked hard for an exhibition that had been organised by the Museo de Bellas Artes, when death came while he was in the hospital San Jorge.
His house by the northern coast of Venezuela housed the Reveron Museum, although it was severely damaged by the Vargas mudslides in December 1999. He is the subject of various homages in different media, and is remembered by his “muñecas” or dolls.
