          Armando Buscarini's Biography

Spanish bohemian poet who published Primavera sin sol —one of his best collections of poems—, five novels, a play, and My Memoirs, an autobiographical volume written at the age of twenty, all in 1924. He alternated among various literary genres with a markedly romantic character —when the avant-garde triumphed in Spain— in search of “that distant glory that never comes”.
Armando Buscarini achieved fame in the literary circles and cafes of Madrid thanks to his extravagant sales methods. In addition to assaulting the guests from cafes such as Levante, Colonial, Pombo, Europeo or Oriente with frequently dedicated poems and books, he used to stand on Calle Alcalá with a stall selling books. There he caught the attention of passersby by shouting, “We must help the poet!”, or with commercial claims of the type, “My heart tells me to give the book for free, my brain says you should pay for it,” or, “If you buy this book, maybe I can offer you that book in which your children learn to respect you.”
His mother admitted him to the Madrid Psychiatric Hospital, from where he was transferred to Valladolid (where he wrote his will) and, finally, he died of schizophrenia and syphilis in the Logroño mental hospital on 9 June 1940 at age 35.
