          Archie Harris's Biography

          American discus thrower who won the 1940 NCAA Track and Field Championships, defending his title in 1941 with the world record of 53.26 m. In 1941 he also became US champion.
          In World War II he was a bomber pilot, but as an African American he couldn’t get a job as a commercial pilot after the war. Finally he became a physical education teacher at the Harlem, New York YMCA.
          He died on 29 October 1965 in New York City at age 47. In 2001 he was introduced into the Indiana University Athletics Hall of Fame.
