          Annemarie Wolff-Richter's Biography

German special education teacher, psychologist and founder-director of the Berlin Children’s Psychological Home. In 1927 she married Helmut Wolff. They had a daughter before divorcing in 1935.
In March 1933, Annemarie Wolff-Richter was arrested for the first time under Nazi racial laws. Between 1933 and 1936 she ran the children’s home in hiding, since she was restricted by a professional ban. In 1936 she was again arrested by the Gestapo for “anti-state activity through the education of children in the Jewish-Marxist sense”.
In 1937 she escaped from custody and fled with her seven-year-old daughter and twelve other children entrusted to her via Prague and Budapest to Croatia. The emigration target was originally a kibbutz in Palestine, but shortly before reaching Dubrovnik she lacked financial resources, and decided to stay in Yugoslavia. On the island of Kor?ula, and in Zagreb, she tried again to establish a home and also sought to connect with her former psychologist colleagues Benno Stein and Vera Stein-Ehrlich.
With the occupation of Croatia by the German Wehrmacht in 1941, she was again at risk of political persecution. Annemarie Wolff-Richter joined circles of resistance and partisans and took particular care of the children of her murdered or underground friends. The later performance athlete and sculptor Boris Grünwald was among the children she cared for in Zagreb. In the summer of 1944 Annemarie Wolff-Richter was tracked down by the Gestapo and sent to the Jasenovac concentration camp where she was murdered in early 1945.
