Andrew Pitcairn-Knowles's Biography
British publisher and pioneering photojournalist who published his photos in the newly founded illustrated magazines of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Andrew Pitcairn-Knowles was born to an expatriate Scottish wool merchant from Aberdeen and a Polish mother; his older brother was the painter James Pitcairn-Knowles. He spent part of his youth in an English colony in Wiesbaden.
Around the turn of the century Andrew Pitcairn-Knowles travelled as a professional photographer through Europe, where he lived in Berlin, Brussels, Paris and Jersey. At that time, magazines illustrated with photos flourished due to improved printing techniques.
As an enthusiastic athlete, Pitcairn-Knowles founded his own magazine, Sport im Bild, in Berlin; the first edition appeared on 10 May 1895 with 30,000 copies.
During this time, sport photography was established as a genre, while the technology of photography was constantly improving, and spectator sports became increasingly popular. Pitcairn-Knowles travelled several times to Ostend in Belgium to photograph car racing, dog racing, crab fishing and children on the beach on land sailing yachts.
In 1904 Sport im Bild was sold to the publisher August Scherl. Andrew Pitcairn-Knowles moved to England in 1911 and, together with his wife Margaret, opened the Riposo health center in Sussex, which existed until 1962. In 1930 he and his wife published a book of vegetarian recipes, Sixty Favourite Riposo Recipes, which was reissued by his grandson Richard in 1980.
Andrew Pitcairn-Knowles died on 27 February 1956 in Hastings at age 84. A large part of the work and documents from the Pitcairn-Knowles estate are now held in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
