          André Monteil's Biography

          French politician.
          In World War II he took part in the Resistance as part of the northern Liberation Movement, controlling the French Forces of Interior Quimper. He was elected to two constituent National Assemblies and the National Assembly as a deputy of the MRP Finistère from 1945 to 1958. He was Secretary of State for the Armed Forces (Navy) in the cabinet of Pleven and in the office of Queuille. in 1951, he was Minister of Health in the government of Pierre Mendes France.
          With Leo Hamon, he was one of the few MRP leaders hostile to the EDC, which led to his exclusion from the Christian Democratic formation in September 1954. Under the Fifth Republic, he was a senator from 1959 to 1971 as a member of the centrist Union group. He chaired the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence of the Senate from 1968 to 1971. André Monteil was a member of the Community of the Senate in 1959-1960. He pledged resolutely in favor of Israel and in the fight against anti-Semitism.
          André Monteil was mayor of Quimper from 1954 to 1959.
          He died on 8 November 1998 in Paris.
