          André Franquin's Biography

Belgian comic strip author. In 1945 he started to work for the publisher Dupuis, well known in Europe for his specialty of cartoons, where he was given the task of resuming the series “Spirou and Fantasio,” which was published in 23 volumes. In 1952 he created the “Marsupilami” character, then in 1957, his anti-hero, “Gaston Lagaffe,” a lazy, creative and superb blunderer. The strip retained such popularity that the series came out in 18 albums in 1997 to celebrate the 40th birthday of Gaston.
Franquin himself was the victim of two severe nervous breakdowns, in 1961 and again in 1982. He married (date unknown) and had one daughter, born 19 February 1957.
He died on 5 January 1997, Callian, France.
