Amalie Lauer's Biography
German politician who headed the women’s school in Cologne, directed the social policy of the Center Party, and was active in the Catholic women’s movement. Her life focus was the cultural, socio-pedagogical and socio-political work of women.
She campaigned for the modernization of marriage and family law. She criticized marital property rights as financial deprivation of women. Lauer criticized the popular rejection of women’s work. Her view on the role of women differed markedly from the prevailing image of marriage and women in the Catholic milieu.
Lauer recognized in National Socialism (Nazism) a danger for the rights of women. She tried to warn of this in many lectures before the movement. In 1932, Lauer also published a paper on this subject: “The woman in the concept of National Socialism.” Her anti-Nazi commitment was in conflict with certain rapprochements between her party and the NSDAP in the middle of 1932. This led to the dismissal of Lauer as headmistress.
She died on 15 October 1950 in Fulda, aged 68.
