Amable Tastu's Biography
French femme de lettres, socialite and literary muse whose romance poems brought her notoriety. In 1851, the rose Amable Tastu was created in tribute at the botanical gardens in Metz.
She was a regular contributor to the Mercure de France and La Muse française. She wrote educational books, translations, a French History Course published in agreement with the Minister of Public Instruction, a volume on German literature, and another on Italian literature. She also penned librettos for musicians like Saint-Saëns.
She was a muse of Lamartine, Sainte Beuve, Hugo, Chateaubriand, and Marceline Desbordes-Valmore. Victor Hugo dedicated his Moïse sur le Nil to her, as did Chateaubriand his Camoens. Sainte-Beuve composed an elegy of 18 quatrains in her honour and devoted 16 pages to her in his Portraits contemporains.
She was married to Perpignan printer Joseph Tastu from 1816 until his death in 1849. They had a son, Eugene. Amable Tastu died on 10 January 1885 at age 89 in Palaiseau, France.
