          Alexander Mackenzie's Biography

          Scottish-born politician who became the second Prime Minister of Canada and the country’s first Liberal head.
          Mackenzie emigrated to Canada in 1842 and married three years later. A stonemason, he became active in the politics of his adopted country, joining what was then known as the Reform Party. Following a succession of political positions, including election to the Ontario Assembly he became Prime Minister in 1874 as head of the Liberal Party. He lost the election in 1878 but remained head of the opposition party until 1880.
          He and his wife Helen had three children, two of whom died in infancy. Helen died in 1852 and he married Jane Sym a year later. He died on April 17, 1892 near Toronto.
