          Aimé Laussedat's Biography

          French scientist today unknown in France, an astronomer specializing in both instrumentation and geodesy, a photographer, topographer, surveyor and cartographer. A researcher and professor at the École Polytechnique, then an eminent head of the National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts, he was also a military engineer from the beginning of his career until 1851, commander of the Genie de Paris left bank during the War of 1870-1871, and again as an engineer officer in charge of the new frontiers from 1871 to 1881. In spite of his resignation as professor at the Ecole Polytechnique and his request for retirement from the army at the beginning of 1871, he was chosen by his friend General Louis Doutrelaine, as his deputy to the Commission for the delimitation of the Franco-German border in Brussels.
          He died on 19 March 1907, aged 87, in Paris.
