          Adrien Lejeune's Biography

French militant political activist, considered the last known surviving Communard, he died at age 94. The Communards were members and supporters of the short-lived 1871 Paris Commune formed in the wake of the French defeat in the Franco-Prussian War.
He participated in the uprising of 4 September 1870 which overthrew Napoleon III and led to the proclamation of the French Republic. Although he had health issues, he enlisted in the National Guard to fight German Empire troops besieging Paris: he was a sergeant in the 2E Company 28th Battalion. On 18 March 1871, he participated in the defence of the cannons of Montmartre hill that Adolphe Thiers intended to requisition, and participated in the proclamation of the Paris Commune. Under the Municipality, he divided his time between Bagnolet and the town hall of the 20th arrondissement of Paris. Participating in the fights of the Bloody Week against the Versaillais, he was arrested on 28 May in Belleville. Doomed on 12 February 1872 to five years of detention, his sentence was reduced to four years on 6 June 1874.
He was welcomed by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in 1928. He died on 9 January 1942 in the USSR at the age of 94 and was buried in Novosibirsk. At the initiative of the French Communist Party, his ashes were repatriated and buried on 23 May 1971 at the Père-Lachaise cemetery on the occasion of the celebration of the centenary of the Paris Municipality.
