          Adolf Butenandt's Biography

          German organic chemist, a professor in Berlin from 1936-1960 who was also the director of the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry. His main work was in the field of the chemistry of steroidal sex hormones. Butenandt isolated oestrone and testosterone, out of which he formed the basis for the production of cortisone. In 1939, he won the Nobel Prize.
          Butenandt died 1/18/1995 in Munich, Germany at age 91, following “a long illness.”
