Adelbert von Keller's Biography
German philologist of Romance and German languages, known for his numerous editions and translations of medieval and early modern literature and his research on the Swabian dialect. He published a monumental edition of the works of Hans Sachs.
He was educated at the University of Tübingen, where, after study at Paris, he became Privatdozent and assistant librarian (1835). After travels in Italy and research in Italian libraries, he was professor and librarian at Tübingen until 1850, when he became president of the Litterarische Verein.
Based on the example of Schmeller’s Bavarian dictionary, Keller laid the foundation for a Swabian dictionary in decades of research and collection work, which was supervised by Hermann Fischer after his death and published in a total of seven volumes.
Adelbert von Keller was the father of the classical philologist Otto Keller (1838–1927). He died in Tübingen on 13 March 1883 at the age of 70 after a long illness.
