          A. P. Giannini's Biography

American businessman who founded the Bank of America, the world’s largest commercial bank. In 1904, Giannini founded the Bank of Italy in San Francisco, and in 1928 he bought the Bank of America and consolidated his vast bank properties, evolving into a huge banking system. By 1945 it was the largest bank in the U.S.
During the early hours of 4/18/1905 when the Great San Francisco earthquake struck, Giannini hitched up a team of horses to a borrowed produce wagon and shifted through the ruined bank building to load $2 million in gold, coins and securities, discretely covered the wealth in vegetables and took the wagon home.
