Anne Tyng's Biography
American architect and professor best known for having collaborated for 29 years with Louis Kahn at his practice in Philadelphia. She served as a professor at the University of Pennsylvania for 27 years, teaching classes in morphology. She was a fellow of the American Institute of Architects and an Academician of the National Academy of Design. She was the first woman licensed as an architect by the state of Pennsylvania.
Tyng’s parents were from old New England families. They were living as Episcopalian missionaries in China when Tyng was born.
Tyng received her bachelor’s degree from Radcliffe College in 1942. Later, she studied with Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer at the architecture school at Harvard University. In 1944, she was among the first women graduated by Harvard. Tyng was the only woman to enter the architecture licensing exam in 1949. She was awarded her PhD by the University of Pennsylvania in 1975.
Tyng, who began her working collaboration and personal relationship with Kahn in 1945, had a daughter, Alexandra, with him. When Tyng became pregnant in 1953, to mitigate the scandal, she went to Rome, Italy for the birth of their daughter.
Anne Tyng died on 27 December 2011 at age 91 in Greenbrae, California.
