Adolf Stoffel's Biography
German orthopedist who in 1911 introduced the technique of selective neurotomy of motor tibial fibers, which today is called in his honour a Stoffel operation. The method is currently rarely used.
Stoffel studied at the anatomical institute of the University of Heidelberg. He initially worked on studies on the distribution of nerve tracts in the nerve cross section. He then worked as a specialist in orthopedic surgery in Mannheim. There he wrote in 1911 together with Oskar Vulpius, his professor and teacher from Heidelberg, the groundbreaking work, Orthopädische Operationslehre (Orthopedic Operations). This book was edited by his wife Edda, nee Stempel, who contributed numerous anatomical preparations. Two years earlier, Stoffel had published anatomischen Studien über die Klumphand with Edda Stempel. Stoffel was first senior physician at the Heidelberg Polyclinic for Orthopedic Surgery and associate professor of orthopedic surgery.
He died on 3 May 1937 in Mannheim, aged 56.
