Red Nichols's Biography
American jazz cornettist, composer, and jazz bandleader, who recorded in a wide variety of musical styles.
Musicians who played for a time in his bands included Miff Mole (trombone), Jimmy Dorsey (alto sax and clarinet), Benny Goodman (clarinet), Glenn Miller (trombone), Jack Teagarden (trombone), Pee Wee Russell (clarinet), Joe Venuti (violin), Eddie Lang (banjo and guitar), and Gene Krupa (drums).
The 1959 Hollywood bio film “The Five Pennies,” starring Danny Kaye as Red Nichols, was very loosely based on Nichols’ career. Nichols played his own cornet parts for the film, but did not appear on screen.
He died at the Mint Hotel in Las Vegas on 28 June 1965 after suffering from paralyzing chest pains.
