Hedwig Lohß's Biography
German author of numerous popular and successful books, written from 1920 to 1976, mainly about animals, for children and youth. Today her works are out of print and the writer herself is almost forgotten.
Hedwig Lohß was characterized by her great love of animals. In her house she kept dogs, cats and other small mammals, but also birds, reptiles and amphibians. Her fellow human beings valued her as an “animal mother” who pampered helpless animals. Observation of her pets formed the basis of her animal portrayals.
Around 1922 Hedwig Lohß married the architect Alfred Staiger (1893–1962), and she adopted the married name Staiger-Lohß. As a writer she continued to use her maiden name. They had three children.
Hedwig Lohß published three books of memoirs in the 1970s. At 84, she retired as a writer having completed around 40 books and 30 smaller works. She died on 12 February 1986 in Stuttgart at age 93.
