Jimmy Knepper's Biography
American jazz trombonist who made his own recordings as leader, as well as performing and recording with Charlie Barnet, Woody Herman, Claude Thornhill, Stan Kenton, Benny Goodman, Gil Evans, Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, Toshiko Akiyoshi and Lew Tabackin, and, most famously, Charles Mingus in the late 1950s and early 1960s. In 1980, he received a Grammy nomination from The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, for “Best Jazz Instrumentalist Performance, Soloist”, for his original album, Cunningbird. Knepper died on 14 June 2003 of complications of Parkinson’s disease at age 75 in Triadelphia, West Virginia.
