Richard Kleindienst's Biography
American attorney and government appointee on 1/31/1969 as Attorney General of the United States during the Richard Nixon White House years. Kleindienst earned his law degree in 1950 and practiced in Phoenix 1950-69.
With an affinity for politics, he became known as Nixon’s “law and order man” while Nixon was vice-president. When the Watergate case came before the public, Kleindienst disqualified himself on 4/19/1973 and resigned two weeks later; however, he did appear at the hearings as a witness.
On 6/24/1976 he was involved in Arizona civil suit for an insurance scam, indicted on 14 felony counts of perjury. The criminal investigation took five years to reach trial, and on 9/22/1981, when Kleindienst was found Not Guilty, he burst into tears. Suspended for one year for infractions, he was reinstated 7/19/1983. He died of lung cancer on February 3, 2000 in Prescott, AZ. He was 76.
