Paul Harvier's Biography
French doctor, a well-respected Parisian clinician known as “Prince de la médecine” (“Prince of Medicine”).
Born into a family of winemakers, after brilliant primary and secondary studies in Troyes, he settled in Paris where he enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine. He became a hospital internal in 1905, a pupil of Achille Souques, then a doctor of medicine in 1909. He followed a hospital career, as head of the laboratory in 1910, Head of the Clinique des maladies infantile in 1911, physician of the hospitals of Paris in 1919, physician of the Beaujon Hospital, Pitié and Cochin, Paris where he oversaw Olivier Troisier, associate professor of the faculties in 1923, professor of therapeutics in 1935, professor of the medical clinic in 1941, and member of the French National Academy of Medicine in 1940, later Secretary General and then Vice-President.
In World War I he was mobilized as a medical assistant major, finishing as chief medical officer of the hospital of Coulommiers, decorated with the Croix de guerre 1914-1918.
In World War II he was mobilized in 1940 as physician-colonel, chief physician of the 8th division in Dijon. His efforts during the conflict earned him the Croix de guerre 1939-1945.
He died on 24 March 1960 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, aged 79.
