Fritz Genschow's Biography
German actor, film director and producer, and screenwriter, awarded the Brothers Grimm Prize in 1963.
In 1930 he co-founded with the actress Renée Stobrawa, his first wife, their own theatre, the Kinder-Theater Berlin (Berlin Children’s Theatre). His career as a film actor had begun in 1929 and in the 1930s he was busy playing supporting roles. He made his debut as a film director with Der interessante Fall (1935).
After the Second World War Genschow was mainly active as a director and screenwriter and became known for adapting numerous fairy tales. In 1947 he became director of the Zehlendorf open-air stage at Waldsee, later named the Genschow Stobrawa Theatre. After the death of Stobrawa he founded the Brothers Grimm Theatre.
Fritz Genschow died in Berlin on 21 June 1977, aged 72. His illegitimate daughter Heidi Genée was also active in the film industry and learned the film business from him. His legitimate children, from his second marriage to Rita-Maria Nowotny, also went into the film industry: Marina Genschow was an actress, and Gabriel Genschow, who died in 2007, was a screenwriter and film producer.
