Luís Freire's Biography
Brazilian civil engineer, a professor at the Polytechnic School of Pernambuco and a prominent figure in state science in the 20th century. He was a catalyst for talent in Pernambuco, stimulating and influencing future scientists, such as Mário Schenberg, José Leite Lopes and Leopoldo Nachbin.
Luís Freire obtained the degree of civil engineer at the School of Engineering of Pernambuco in 1918. In 1919, he attained the chair of mathematics of the Normal School of Pernambuco. In 1920 he joined the School of Engineering, today part of the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE). He became a full professor of physics in 1934, receiving the title of Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences.
Luís Freire also taught in the main colleges of Recife, being a professor of physics in Ginásio Pernambucano and other private colleges, such as Nóbrega and Osvaldo Cruz. In Rio de Janeiro, he was a professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of the Federal District (UDF), today the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
In 1951, Luís Freire was appointed a member of the newly created National Research Council, currently CNPq, participating in the Commission of Physical and Mathematical Sciences.
Luís Freire died on 17 July 1963, aged 67.
