Eduard Frankfort's Biography
Dutch Jewish painter.
He was the youngest son, the sixth of ten children of the merchant Salomon Simon Frankfort (2 July 1817, Deventer – 28 August 1891, Amsterdam) and his second wife Dine Bendien (16 Nov 1832, Almelo – 13 Nov 1897, Amsterdam).
Around 1875 the family moved to Amsterdam. His father hooped he would become a merchant, but Eduard preferred to becoem a painter. From age 11 to 17, he studied at at Atelier Bing and thereafter under August Allebé in Amsterdam (1887) and finished his education at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
He painted Jewish religious themes, later farmers.
He was rather successful and won in 1903 the gold medal of the Royal Art Society “Arti et Amicitiae”.
In 1905 went to his sister in South Africa. Back in Amsterdam he married Klara Kloots (21 July 1889, Amsterdam) 5 September 1911. The couple lived on Beethovenstraat in Amsterdam and had four children.
He had art exhibitions in Paris, St.Louis, Arnhem and Barcelona.
He died on 19 August 1920 in Laren.
