John Frankenheimer's Biography
American film-maker; director. First becoming interested in film while in the Air Force 1951-1953, he learned techniques and made several documentary shorts. Returning to civilian life, he joined CBS-TV in New York as an assistant director; then was promoted in November 1954 to direct “You Are There.” He went on to direct over 125 TV plays.
After directing his first film in 1956, “The Young Stranger,” he returned to TV. After his second movie, “The Young Savages,” he decided to stay in film. He did “Birdman Of Alcatraz” and “Manchurian Candidate” in 1942 and continued working until his latest film, “Black Sunday” in 1977.
Frankenheimer, one of Hollywood’s foremost directors, was nominated for 14 Emmy awards in a career that spanned nearly five decades. His political thrillers set the pace for his era. He died of a stroke due to complications following spinal surgery on 7/06/2002, Los Angeles, CA. He was survived by his wife of 41 years, Evans, and two daughters.
