Telenga) and remarried with Hinke (Jans) Huizinga, from whom he got eleven children. One child died at a young age. From 1861 he was a book seller in Holverd.
At an early age, he devoted himself to literature, the Volkstheater and the Fryske Beweging , a movement for equality and development of the West Frisian language . He owes his fame in Friesland to this last activity and his collaboration in a Dictionary of West Frisian (1885), for his works had at that time only small literary value. But later he was seen as the great man of the Frisian movement. His verses and novels were reprinted many times.
