Evelina Cattermole's Biography
Italian writer an poet. In 1871, she married lieutenant of the Bersaglieri Francesco Eugenio Mancini, born in 1845, with whom she lived in Milano. She moved in literary circles among admirers, and a young man became her lover. Her husband caught them in mid May 1875 in flagrant adultery. He demanded a duel which ended tragically with the wounding and thus the death (7 June 1875) of the lover, Bennati Baylon. At the same time, he had applied for a divorce and chased away his wife. The scandal that followed in the public opinion was enormous, and Evelina, after a last tribute to the tomb of Bennati, fled from Milan covered with shame. In the years after that, she became a famous poet and writer.
She died on 30 November 1896, at age 47, from a pistol wound, afflicted in a quarrel by her lover, the painter Ferruccio Bottini. Bottini was sentenced to eleven years in prison.
